Noisy Offering This Sunday, February 8 – The wonderful monthly tradition of our children collecting coins during the worship service and making a noisy offering as they pour the coins into a metal pan will take place during this Sunday’s worship.  Please remember to bring your noisy change along with your regular offering.  The kids love being “junior ushers” and the funds go to important missions and ministries of our church.  Thanks!

Adult Bible Study, Wednesday, February 11 – Join us at the Parsonage, 75 La Rue Road, at 7:30 p.m. as we explore some of the very early Christian writings that were not included in our Bible.  These faith writings of early followers of Jesus still have much to teach us in the twenty first century.  We hope to see you there.

Ash WednesdayFebruary 18 – Please join us for an Ash Wednesday service in the Sanctuary beginning at 7:30 p.m. on February 18.  This service will start our Lenten forty days of spiritual preparation for Easter.  The service is designed to be reflective as we center ourselves in faith journeying with Jesus toward Calvary and resurrection on Easter morning.

Skylands District Day of Learning – for laity and clergy to be held on Saturday, February 21, 2015, 9:00am – 1:15pm at the Butler United Methodist Church, 5 Bartholdi Avenue. Scholarship Opportunities from the Church – Here at the UMC at Newfoundland, we have a wonderful scholarship for a graduating senior who’s an active member of our church and plans to be a full-time student next year.  And there are a number of United Methodist scholarships and loans available through the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference and the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry.  These funds are for both traditional 18 to 21 year-old students and those who are beginning their higher education later in life or working on a second degree.  Rich can give you more information, and the websites also have all the information you’ll need, as well as application requirements and forms.  Check them out – the conference website is www.gnjumc.org and the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry website is www.gbhem.org.  Due dates for many applications are in March,  for the Newfoundland scholarship in May.

Contribution Envelopes – New contribution envelopes are in the Narthex for you to take.  If you don’t have envelopes and would like to use them, please contact Missy Rhinesmith at 973-271-2484 or Missyr1109@gmail.com. Electronic Fund Transfer is also available and if you would like information on that please contact Missy.

Thanks!

Dear Friends,

At worship this morning, I announced that after a great deal of thought and prayer, I’ve made the decision to retire from the Greater New Jersey Conference when the current appointment year closes at the end of June. My time here at Newfoundland has been both satisfying and challenging, and I particularly want you to know how very much I’ve appreciated the opportunity to get to know you. You are a caring, concerned, and committed congregation, and it’s been my privilege to serve you.

I came to this decision for positive, forward-looking reasons. Just as I feel called to ministry, I feel called to this next phase of my life. I am in good health, and retiring at this time gives me a chance to realize some new possibilities, including travel, a return to teaching, working on some long-planned writing projects, and being closer to our family.

Our Staff-Parish Relations Committee, under the gifted leadership of Susan Hinton, has already been in contact with our District Superintendent, Steve Bechtold. The committee and Steve will work together to ensure a smooth transition to your next minister, and I, too, look forward to working with him or her as well to foster a warm welcome.

In the meantime, we have a full five and a half months to be in supportive and dynamic ministry together. Thank you for the many ways you’ve both welcomed me as your minister and ministered to me. I hope you have found our journey together to be as fruitful as I have. May the next chapter of your life as a community of faith be rich and fulfilling, and may you continue to grow spiritually and in witness and mission. You will be a blessing to your next minister, as you’ve been to me. You have my very best wishes.

Grace and peace,

Rich

E. Richard Knox

Adult Bible Study will take a break during this holiday season.  We will start up again on Wednesday, January 29that the parsonage.  For the Wednesdays leading up to Lent, we will discuss the gospels that were not included in our Bible.  Many of these writings have been discovered in the past century. Christmas Caroling – The A&P in Milton is welcoming people from the area churches to Christmas Carol in its entryway tomorrow, Saturday, December 20. We will join with our friends from Oak Ridge Presbyterian Church caroling from noon to 1 p.m. Barb Miller, our music director, is organizing our participation. If you would like to join your voice with the voices of others from our church, please contact Barb so we know you are coming. Barb’s e-mail is 1thess51522@gmail.com or you may call her at 201-486-0257. We hope to see you tomorrow and be ready to have a great time singing about the birth of Jesus!

Blue Christmas Service Sunday, December 21st at 3:00 pm – Do you sometimes feel disconnected from this season of joy? If you do, you’re not alone. This can be a time of very real pain and suffering for those for whom the holidays are simply not joyful, for those who are lonely, who mourn, who feel alienated from family or friends, who are hurt or distressed. The holidays themselves can bring on seemingly inexplicable feelings of isolation, depression, and sadness.
We invite you to a safe place of comfort and acceptance at our Blue Christmas service at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 21 in the sanctuary. Don’t hesitate to invite any friends or loved ones whom you think might also be feeling isolated from this season of hope.
God is with us in sadness and in joy, and we are not alone, now or ever. Find rest and solace in God’s grace and the company of our loving and affirming community of faith. All are always welcome here.

Congregation Carols at 5:00 pm Sunday, December 21st – One of the many joys of Christmas is the opportunity to sing the wonderful Christmas carols. Under the leadership of Barb Miller, our music director, we will sing carols for some of the home-bound of our congregation; may also sing at a local nursing home. It will be a chance to bring Christmas cheer to friends and neighbors while we enjoy fellowship and song. Come to the church early (between 4 & 5) and enjoy hot chocolate and some special Christmas goodies in Fellowship Hall.

Noisy Offering Postponed to this Week – The wonderful monthly tradition of our children collecting coins during the worship service and making a noisy offering as they pour the coins into a metal pan on the second Sunday of the month has been postponed one week. This Sunday, December 21 will be a special worship highlighting our children of Sunday School and Bright Beginnings. It is appropriate that the Noisy Offering be collected on this Sunday.

Adult Bible Study will take a break during this holiday season. We will start up again in January. The schedule and topics will be shared in the Chimes and the e-mail blasts. Thanks!

Help Needed on Christmas Eve – We will have three services on Christmas Eve (5, 8, & 11). Each service is different and calls for different voices in the liturgies. If you know the service (or services) that you will be attending and you would like to have a reading part in the services or you might be an usher helping with the candles, collection, and making sure our “regulars” and our guests have bulletins, etc., please call, email, text, or talk with Rich about your willingness to volunteer. Thanks!

Christmas Eve Schedule of Services –
Wednesday, December 24 at 5 p.m. – A Christmas Eve service for children and families, with carols and candles.
Wednesday, December 24 at 8 p.m. – A Christmas Eve candlelight service of traditional and contemporary carols with a short homily.
Wednesday, December 24 at 11 p.m. – Our “midnight service:” a candlelight service of lessons and carols.

Christmas blessings to you all!

Rich
