Wen Wen Van Der Wende Amazing Christmas Song

Good morning, church!
We wanted to share an audio file of a recording by Wen Wen Van Der Wende of “O, Come, O, Come, Emmanuel” – She is singing all parts on this and it is just gorgeous!
May this brighten your day as you prepare for a different kind of Christmas this year!
Laurel Van Der Wende has done some wonderful research on this song, and here are her comments on what you are about to hear.
Enjoy!
The hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel takes its inspiration from the prophet Isaiah (chapter 7, verse 14) who said: “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign: Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” In the New Testament, we learn that Immanuel means God with us.
A Treasury of Christmas Songs and Carols (Simon) explains the history of how this song was used: “On December 17 in medieval monasteries, the abbot would intone the original first stanza at vespers, both before and after the Magnificat. On successive evenings, each of the principal officers of the monastery would take his turn with another of the stanzas, the whole series being known as the “Seven O’s.” Each O hailed the coming Saviour under a different epithet: O Sapientia, O Adonai, etc. After the service, the officer was expected to stand some sort of treat, usually edible, for all the monks. The prayer, despite the solemnity to modern ears that lies in the modal plain song, was rightly joyful.”

Giving Tree

This year many things are different, including our Giving Tree program.

The Headstart program at the Upper Greenwood Lake school has once again given us a list of children in need of support. This year we will condense the regular list to just be based on gift cards. Please support the program and the kids by providing gift cards, preferably to Wal-Mart, so that the parents can shop for themselves. You can review the list and dedicate your gift to a particular family or give it undedicated and the school will decide how to give them out. Generally they have an excellent understanding of the needs and do a great and fair job giving out the gift cards.

Cards can be for any amount, $10, $20, etc. Multiple simple denominations cards allow them to more readily be evenly distributed.

Please deliver or mail your gift cards to the church office. The office hours are Monday – Thursday 2:30pm – 4:30pm. The cards will be collected and delivered to the school in Upper Greenwood Lake. You could label your envelope “Attn: GT”.

The timing of many things is different this year. Normally we would try to complete our collection two Sundays before Christmas, Dec 13. I will ask the church office to make a first delivery when a significant number of cards have been received, perhaps Friday the 11th or Monday the 14th. A second delivery can be made later in the week of Dec 18.

Thanks again for your support of this program. So many families have been blessed over the years by the generosity of our members.

Important Sunday Worship Info

Dear Friends,

Because of a sinus infection I will not be able to lead in-person worship on Sunday morning.  Our first priority is always to keep our parishioners safe and so this Sunday we will worship God online through Zoom at 10:00 am.  For those of you unfamiliar with Zoom you can use your telephone to call in and listen to the service.  Or if you have a computer or smart phone you can connect with those.  You do not have to have your image broadcast and you won’t appear on the recording.  Here is the link for the service:

Important Sunday Worship Information

Dear Friends,

This Sunday (November 22) is Thanksgiving and Commitment Sunday in the life of the church.  I encourage you to give thanks to God, remembering that all we have is a gift from God’s loving and generous hands.  In response to God’s generosity I also encourage you to make a financial commitment to give to God through the church by submitting your pledge card.  Our commitments will be blessed during Sunday’s worship.

I also want you to know that our Church Council discussed whether or not to remain open for indoor worship.  As you know, Governor Murphy has signed Executive Order No. 196 lowering indoor and outdoor gathering limits.  These limits however do not apply to religious gatherings.  We are still allowed to gather in the sanctuary at 25% capacity (which is 34 people in our space).  The Council reviewed our safety protocols and has decided that at this time it is still safe for us to gather for indoor worship.  We have had no more than 29 people in worship at a time and everyone in the building has followed our safety guidelines which include (but are not limited to) wearing a mask, maintaining a safe 6 feet distance, and refraining from fellowship after worship.  We remind you that if you are feeling sick, or are in a high risk group, to please remain home for your own safety, and the care of others.

At Noon on Sunday (November 22) we will have an opportunity to safely share in fellowship with one another through a Zoom fellowship time.  You can use the link to join with your computer or smartphone, or call in over your landline.  Here is the information:

Meet our Bishop

Dear Friends,

Every year the Bishop of the Greater NJ Annual Conference spends a day meeting with the clergy and laity of each of our 9 Districts.  This year because of COVID-19 restrictions Bishop Schol will be meeting regionally with us via Zoom.  Our church is in the Northern Region, and our opportunity to meet virtually with the Bishop is on Thursday, November 19th at 7:00 pm.

If you’d like to meet our Bishop to listen and understand about the state of the church and share information about GNJ mission and priorities, I invite you to register for the 7:00 pm Laity session by going to the Conference website:
